Accommodations for Golden Bear Orientation

The New Student Services staff works to accommodate students with particular needs whenever possible for Golden Bear Orientation, as outlined below. Also, we do realize that a very limited number of students may have unusual or extenuating circumstances that prevent them from attending GBO; please review our Exemptions process below.

New Student Services works with the Disabled Students’ Program (DSP) to provide accommodations for the week of Golden Bear Orientation. Please see our Disability Accommodations web page for details and how to notify us of your needs.

Students with Dietary Concerns

Meals provided during Golden Bear Orientation will automatically include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. Kosher and Halaal meals can be provided by asking any Cal Dining staff member at the dining hall. If at any time you do not see food out that meets your needs, please feel free to reach out to any member of the Cal Dining staff.
For students who wish to celebrate Shabbat, the Berkeley Hillel staff are opening up their homes for dinner at 7:30 p.m. For more information and to sign up, please fill out this form by Wednesday, August 16, 2017.

Students Who Need Religious Accommodations

UC Berkeley values and respects all religions, and we want to ensure you are able to observe your religious traditions during GBO. If you require any religious accommodations for GBO, please email New Student Services staff at to make arrangements.

Participation in Golden Bear Orientation (GBO) is integral to your successful transition to UC Berkeley. It is the university's expectation that you attend GBO and it is considered mandatory. Including the New Student Programming Fee. However, there are rare circumstances in which you may be exempt from GBO as a whole. Examples of potentially warranted exemptions include, but are not limited to, medical need, dependent child care, severe illness, unexpected family emergencies, active military duty, or financial hardship if there is a need to take time away from full-time employment.

Please fill out the GBO Exemption Form if you have extenuating circumstances preventing you from attending GBO. Your application will be reviewed by a committee and you will be notified via email if you have been granted an exemption.

Deadline to submit GBO Exemption Form: December 1, 2017
Notification via email of your status: December 15, 2017

Partial Exemptions

Did you schedule a doctor's or DMV appointment during Golden Bear Orientation? Do you need to leave at a certain time after dinner to catch the bus to your home? If so, please communicate with your Orientation Leader during your first group meeting any portions of the program that you may be missing. Note: Some programs such as College Days and Bear Pact may require you to do make up the missed information.
